Only a few lucky people find a workplace that feels like family. Banessa Petty, the new Online Sales Counselor for Alvarez Construction Company is one of them.
Petty started with the Baton Rouge homebuilder in April 2015 as an Office Coordinator. Back then, the company had just 10 employees (not including the Alvarez family) and four communities. They were growing quickly and already breaking ground on their fifth community.
It turns out, she was in for some pretty big changes in her personal life, too.
Shortly after starting with Alvarez, she met a handsome young redhead through her church. His name was Matthew Petty. The two fell in love quickly and married in December 2017. Banessa was thriving.
Alvarez had continued to expand and was ready to start searching for their first Online Sales Coordinator. Bannessa knew the perfect candidate. Matthew applied and was hired, which in turn, began the beautiful work-life balance that brings her joy today.
Matthew was later promoted to Director of Sales and Marketing, which left them again searching for the perfect candidate. Alvarez needed someone intelligent and kind to serve as the first contact that prospective homebuyers meet. Someone who could help them find the right location, community, and home, while filling them in on the building and buying process along the way.
Choosing the job was a no-brainer.
“I wanted a role where I could be more in touch with people,” explains Banessa, who had taken maternity leave earlier this year when the couple welcomed their first child, Adrian. “For many of our buyers, it’s their first time, so I guide them in this process, and I try to make it an exciting day every day.”
Giving the right type of help means asking a lot of questions, starting with “Why do you want to move?” She explains that different personality types have different priorities. “If you’re analytical, you probably don’t care to imagine sitting in the living room by the fireplace. You want to know about the smart home technology and the quality of the home’s construction.”
Timelines vary, too. Someone who has sold their home probably plans for a quick move, so Banessa guides them to the move-in ready homes for sale. When there’s more time, she says, people often like the opportunity to build their home from the ground up.
From counselor to customer
Banessa now has even more to offer her customers since she and Matthew have the experience of building a new home with Alvarez Construction Company.
They started looking in Prairieville, which has an ideal location close to her parents and excellent schools. A pair of recent #1 rankings on Niche.com’s 2019 list of Best Suburbs to Live in Louisiana AND Best Places to Raise a Family in Louisiana didn’t hurt either.
Alvarez has two communities in Prairieville. The first is Ironwood Estates, which they chose, and the second is Grove at Ascension. The two then took their combined knowledge of Alvarez Construction Company’s floor plans and picked the Jasmine, which fit nicely with their needs and their budget. As avid people-watchers, the front porch included in the Jasmine was a real plus, and the corner lot expanded their view.
Banessa and Matthew then entered a new domain: homebuyers. They worked through the process of making design selections and following the progress of the construction.
“There are so many things I didn’t know that went into building a home until I was on the other side of it. We got to experience what our customers do, and learn from it. We also made suggestions on how to improve things, so everyone learned.” Banessa added that the communication was fantastic and the Project Managers stayed on top of everything.
Some couples might not be able to work together, particularly within the same department, but Matthew and Banessa do it well. She technically reports to her husband on the job, but says they have the same respectful partnership at work as they do at home.
Now the couple—who are self-professed Christmas fanatics— turn their attention to the holidays where they are preparing for two big “firsts.” This will of course be the first holiday in their new home, but also, the first with their baby boy making it an extra joyous season.
She says there’s still time for homebuyers to have their first holiday in a new home this year, too. With so many available homes for sale near Baton Rouge, all you have to do is contact Banessa. There’s no one better to guide you on the smooth path to homeownership!
