Louisiana Lawn Care and Landscaping Guide for New Construction Homeowners

Alvarez Construction builds new homes in Baton Rouge, St. George, Central, Denham Springs, Zachary, Gonzales, and Madisonville, and for a lot of first-time buyers, a freshly sodded yard is the first lawn they've ever fully owned. New sod behaves differently than an established lawn, and Louisiana's climate adds its own rules. Here's what actually matters, based on guidance from the LSU AgCenter, Louisiana's own turfgrass research authority.

Your New Sod Needs More Water Than You Think

When sod is harvested, most of its root system stays behind in the field. That makes a newly laid lawn far more vulnerable to drying out than an established one, according to the LSU AgCenter. Two rules from the AgCenter to follow closely:

  • Stay off new sod entirely for the first two weeks.
  • Hold off on the first mow until the grass reaches about 3 inches. Cutting it earlier stresses a root system that isn't ready.

Timing: April through October is the AgCenter's recommended window for laying sod in Louisiana, giving grass warm soil temperatures to establish before cooler weather arrives.

Know Which Grass You Actually Have

The LSU AgCenter's Louisiana Home Lawn Series identifies four warm-season turfgrasses used in Louisiana home lawns: St. Augustinegrass, centipedegrass, zoysiagrass, and bermudagrass. Each has different care needs:

  • St. Augustinegrass — the most widely planted and shade-tolerant. Needs more fertilizer than the others and prefers a soil pH close to neutral. Mow at 2.5 to 3 inches, never cutting more than a third of the blade height at once.
  • Centipedegrass — needs less of everything: low nitrogen, infrequent mowing at around 1.5 inches, acidic soil in the 5 to 6 pH range. Over-fertilizing is one of the most common mistakes new homeowners make with this grass.
  • Zoysiagrass and bermudagrass — tolerate more sun and traffic, but need more consistent maintenance.

If you're not sure which grass your builder used, ask directly rather than guess and apply the wrong fertilizer program.

Start With a Soil Test, Not a Bag of Fertilizer

Submit a soil sample to the LSU AgCenter's Soil Testing and Plant Analysis Lab, available through your local parish extension office, before you buy anything. Louisiana soils vary in pH and drainage from lot to lot, even within the same subdivision — a soil test tells you what your yard actually needs instead of applying a generic lawn program.

Before You Dig, Call 811

Louisiana law requires calling 811 before any digging project — planting a tree, installing a bed, adding irrigation — so utility lines can be marked. It's a free call that protects you from a genuinely dangerous mistake, whether you're planning a small flower bed or a full landscaping project.

Drainage Comes Before Curb Appeal

New construction lots are graded for drainage at build time, directing water away from your foundation toward the street or drainage system. Avoid raised beds, mulch berms, or landscaping that redirects water back toward the foundation — especially in a climate with heavy, fast rainfall like Louisiana's. If you're unsure how your lot is graded to drain, ask directly rather than assume.

Building the Rest of Your Landscape

Once your lawn is established, most choices are personal preference — but Louisiana's humidity and heat make some easier to live with than others. Native and adapted plants typically need less supplemental watering once established than imported ornamentals bred for drier climates. Questions About Your Specific Lot

Every lot grades and drains a little differently. If you have questions about your yard, your grading, or what's already installed, call (225) 240-4662 rather than guessing.
